The publication, in partnership with Revista Descompasso, presents the dossier “A Cinema of Impurities: The Gestures of Narcisa Hirsch.”
FestCurtasBH is publishing, in digital and free format, the catalog of its twenty-seventh edition. Over the past few years, the festival has strived to expand spaces for critical reflection beyond the screenings, consolidating itself as a catalyst for robust theoretical thinking on independent cinemas in Brazil and the world. In this sense, the publication goes beyond its memorialistic vocation, recording the encounters of films with their respective audiences over ten days, establishing itself as an important reference for the future of national cinema studies.
This year, on the occasion of the special program The Gestures of Narcisa Hirsch – a cartography, never before seen in Belo Horizonte, of images and gestures by the German-Argentine experimental filmmaker – the editors of Revista Descompasso, who proposed this curatorial mapping, also present the dossier A Cinema of Impurities, in which thirteen authors are invited to intuitively explore the “dense, malleable, and sometimes elusive body” of Hirsch’s work. Rather than deciphering a set of films, the essays seek to dance with its enigmas.
Furthermore, readers will be able to learn about the conceptual, aesthetic, formal, and political propositions that guided the curators of the parallel programs Songs of the Land and Sea, Urban Archaeologies, Tropical Malady, and Spell-Films, whose movement to identify and highlight the re-enchantment of our common experiences, in the face of the violence of our time, extends to the entire event program.
