THE FESTIVAL
FestCurtasBH – Belo Horizonte International Short Film Festival reaches its 26ᵗʰ edition, marking nearly 30 years of existence, with steady and vigorous steps. Its journey is neither linear nor aspires to be: the festival’s vitality lies in its rich multiplicity of collaborators, films, and proposals. Founded in 1994, it experienced a five-year hiatus between its second and third editions. The invisible thread that weaves its history is an unwavering commitment to the strength and freedom potentially implicit in the short film’s unique cinematic nature. Welcoming all genres and formats, FestCurtasBH focuses particularly on experimentation and inventive, socially engaged cinematic expressions. The Festival also highlights its research-oriented essence, dedicating itself to exploring cinema’s history. Through its films, it examines key driving forces and aesthetic and political dynamics, including the legitimization, erasure, and rediscovery of works, authors, and practices.
In addition to screening contemporary films—competing in various categories for the Capivara Trophy—and historical works, FestCurtasBH offers seminars, debates, courses, special events, and, following the festival, a traveling film exhibition that visits over 30 cities across the interior of Minas Gerais state. The annually published catalog not only preserves the Festival’s memory but also serves as a platform to expand and deepen the reflections proposed by each edition. It features unpublished or rarely accessible texts, translations, facsimiles, and other archival materials.
Submissions for the 26th edition are now closed, and the 26ᵗʰ FestCurtasBH – Belo Horizonte International Short Film Festival will take place from October 25 to November 3, 2024.
